Traces of Memory: 400th Anniversary of Salem, Massachusetts

Commissioned by the City of Salem, Massachusetts, as part of the city’s 400th anniversary celebration, Traces of Memory is a permanent public sculpture created for the Salem Ferry Terminal. Located at the point where the city meets the harbor, the work explores how paths of movement, arrival, and memory have shaped Salem over centuries.

The sculpture’s layered steel planes are derived from maps representing different periods in the site’s history, including Indigenous trails and patterns of movement, early maritime routes, and later streets and city plans. These layers overlap, intersect, appear, and disappear as viewers move around the sculpture, allowing different moments in the landscape’s history to occupy the same space. A central aperture frames the harbor, water, and sky, connecting these traces of the past to the contemporary ferry terminal and the continuing movement of people through Salem.
